Billa Kalina Web Resources - Pangea Web Resources - Peoples Conference on Nuclear Waste
There's really THREE radioactive waste dumps being proposed for Australia :
- a national dump for Australian LOW-LEVEL and SHORT-LIVED INTERMEDIATE radioactive waste, mostly from the Lucas Heights nuclear establishment, but also hospitals, industry, universities, etc.
- a national dump for Australian LONG-LIVED INTERMEDIATE and HIGH-LEVEL radioactive wastes, generated entirely by the Lucas Heights nuclear establishment
- an INTERNATIONAL HIGH-LEVEL nuclear waste dump proposed by nuclear stalwart Pangea Resources.
This is despite the Esk radioactive waste repository operating in south-eastern Queensland, and the Mt Walton radioactive and intractable wastes dump operating in south-central Western Australia. Both manage (not dispose of) low-level radioactive wastes, with Mt Walton also receiving toxic and hazardous chemical and mining wastes also. Both sites have noted environmental problems.
The Australian dumps are targetted for the Billa Kalina region of South Australia, stretching from Coober Pedy to Marree to Woomera. The international high-level dump is being pushed by Pangea Resources, and is probably going to be targetted in Western Australia.

www.adhills.com.au/peoplesconference/This great initiative is to organise a bipartisan and open "People's Conference" on the proposed nuclear waste dumps for South Australia, namely the Billa Kallina and Pangea proposals. Leading advocates from both the nuclear industry, environment groups, indigenous groups and the government have been invited to attend (although both the SA and federal governments are yet to agree to participate).

Environmentalists and the Anti-Karinya/Umoona community showing
outright opposition to the Radioactive Waste Dump.
Coober Pedy, September 29, 1998.The federal Department of Primary Industry & Energy (DPIE) have released the report for Phase 3 of the Low-Level & Short-Lived Intermediate Radioactive Waste Dump.
A company from the USA, Pangea Resources, has already approached the federal government about privatising the facility and possibly accepting high level nuclear waste, mostly from overseas and possibly even ex-military plutonium.
They have chosen a site the size of a football field somewhere within an area the size of Tasmania. The preferred site is the Billa Kalina region of South Australia, extending from Roxby Downs north towards Marree and west to near Coober Pedy.
The Anti-Kirinya/Umoona Aboriginal community from Coober Pedy, who have traditional responsibilities for the land in the Billa Kalina region, are opposed to the dump. A recent public meeting between environmental groups, the Anti-Karinya and the Coober Pedy People Against the Dump was held on September 29, 1998. The message is clear - keep it in the cities where the "experts" who produce have to manage it themselves. Don't continue to sacrifice Australia's beautiful arid land heritage with yet more toxic and intractable waste from the nuclear industry juggernaut.
Copies of the information kits can be obtained from the Bureau of Resource Sciences on 1800 682 704 or on email at Repository@isr.gov.au. The project website is at :
http://www.disr.gov.au/resources/radwaste/index.html Initial comments were due by April 30, 1998. There is expected to a detailed Environmental Impact Statement prepared for the final site chosen, and the April 30 deadline was for initial public comment on the Phase 3 report only.
