Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd - General Atomics

Heathgate - General Atomics
Heathgate Resources Pty Ltd :

Heathgate Resources is a fully-owned automoton of USA nuclear multinational, General Atomics (GA), from San Diego, California, USA. GA was one of the world’s first commercial nuclear power companies in the 1950’s - founded by members of the Manhattan nuclear weapons project. A profile on GA is given below. Heathgate was formed in 1990 by GA to purchase the Beverley deposit, and any other nuclear ventures GA might develop in Australia.

Heathgate rapidly advanced their development of the Beverley deposit as an acid-ISL mine upon re-election of the Coalition in 1996. By late 1997, they had been granted approvals for further "exploration" at the deposit, where a trial mine would produce real uranium as a by-product of the exploration. This is their Field Leach Trial (FLT), which commenced January 2, 1998, with the injection of large quantities of sulphuric acid into the groundwater. The new EIS was released on June 29, and the (alleged) Supplement on October 2, just in case the Labour Party were swept to power. Due to the postponement of the Beverley EIS approval and the appointment of an independent expert on ISL from the USA to assess the project, the final approval was not received until April 2000, always a rubber stamp formality though (EIS's are not meant to be real scientific assessments of course).

The Beverley ISL project is effectively now the most advanced uranium project in Australia, due to traditional and community campaigning temporarily stopping Jabiluka. However, despite signing agreements with remaining Native Title claimants (amid claims of significant duress) in August 1999, an increasing number of Adnyamathanha are becoming openly angry and defiant of Heathgate since they have failed to fulfil their part of the agreement - such as tenders for construction work, aboriginal employment etc. Heathgate appear to be getting more voracious as time goes by.

As if Beverley is not enough, Heathgate have now started exploration across the northern reaches of Lake Frome in Joint Venture with Giralia Resources, who openly believe the propaganda about ISL.

    General Atomics :
    Based on Mudd (1999).

The USA-based nuclear multi-national, General Atomics (GA), has a sordid past and is currently making aggressive plans to expand it’s operations in Australia, and thereby act as a catalyst to dramatically expand the nuclear industry in the process. GA, privately owned by the Blue family of Texas, was founded in 1955 to develop peaceful uses for nuclear energy - founded by members of the Manhattan nuclear weapons project. GA has many subsidiaries all over the world in diverse high technology, space, military and nuclear technology areas. Currently, GA are involved in (among others) :

  • largest fusion research centre in the USA
  • cryotechnology
  • advanced electronics & technologies
  • gas-cooled nuclear power reactors
  • Proposed sulphuric acid In Situ Leach uranium mine at Beverley, SA
  • TRIGA nuclear research reactors
  • major contractor to the US Dept. of Defense, Dept. of Energy & National Science Foundation
  • aeronautical technology
  • uranium conversion and nuclear fuel services
