36 ANZ/Australian and New Zealand Banking Group "... the most important link in the financing
of the Australian uranium industry" (1).Formed in 1970, ANZ was by the 1980s the 12th largest company in Australia and makes a greater profit than any other private trading bank in the country. Through its completely owned subsidiary ANZ Nominees, it has important interests in all of Australia's current major uranium projects:
In addition to many interlocking directorships, ANZ is the sole banker for EZ, Petromin Oil and Transoil; it's a banker for Western Mining, for CRA, and for Mary Kathleen Uranium as well as for Peko Wallsend.
- Pancontinental: At 31 August 1979, ANZ held over 2 million shares making it the largest shareholder in the company.
- Western Mining Corp Ltd: No. 2 shareholder. Peko Wallsend: No. 3 shareholder.
- Oilmin NL: No. 3 shareholder.
- CRA: No.4 shareholder with 7.5 million shares at the beginning of 1980.
- EZ Industries: No. 5 shareholder with more than two million shares in 1979.
In early 1990, ANZ agreed to merge with National Mutual Life Association, Australia's second biggest non-bank financial institution. This deal, the biggest ever in the country's financial sector, has created ANZ-NM, with combined assets of not many cents less than one hundred billion US dollars (2).
